A Modern Adaptation
In this BBC adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Munk Studios retold the story for children aged 7-11 years old. In this retelling of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we preserved the scope and richness of the original story, characters and language. The action of the play is divided into 8 easy-to-follow parts highlighting its most important themes through accessible and age-appropriate storytelling devices such as narrative exposition, summary and/or simplification of complex speeches and abbreviation of non- essential plot. Although a significant portion of the story was communicated through bespoke third-person narration specifically designed to appeal to contemporary audiences, we did not shy away from Shakespeare’s verse. It is our belief that Shakespearean English can function as a living language when sufficiently brought to life, which is exactly what we did.
